How NY Prepares For Dirty Bomb
It’s a scenario that U.S. intelligence professionals and those tasked to protect New York City have worried about for years: Terrorists acquire the material for an atomic bomb and detonate it in the U.S.
“The likelihood of an atomic bomb is much less because the technology for nuclear detonation is complicated and requires some special elements,” says Michael Chertoff, the former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
He says assembling and deploying a so-called dirty bomb would be a lot easier for terrorists.
“A radiological bomb is nothing more than radioactive material imbedded in, or wrapped around a conventional explosive so that is a much easier type of device to construct and also to get the material for.
So, it is not a fanciful thing to focus on,” Chertoff says.

Former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says the biggest threat from terrorists may come in the form of biological weapons.
In an interview segment aired Thursday on the FederalNewsRadio program Homeland Security: Inside and Out, the ex-DHS head said concerns about the possibility of a biological attack should outweigh fears of an attack using a nuclear weapon, chemical agents or conventional explosives.

If Mexican drug violence spills across the U.S. border, Homeland Security officials say they have a contingency plan to assist border areas that includes bringing in the military.
“It’s a common sense extension of our continued work with our state, local, and tribal partners in securing the southwest border,” DHS spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said Friday.

Although no credible or specific threat is being reported or investigated, the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama is no doubt an attractive target for both international and domestic terrorists. According to AP sources, an internal intelligence assessment, says the high visibility of the event, the presence of dignitaries and the significance of swearing in America’s first black president make the inauguration vulnerable to attacks.
What concerns analysts most, the report says, is the potential use of improvised explosive devices, a hostage situation or suicide bombers.

The terrorism threat to the United States over the next five years will be driven by instability in the Middle East and Africa, persistent challenges to border security and increasing Internet savvy, says a new intelligence assessment.

It starts on a cold November night. You went to sleep, comfortably warm, after listening to the late news: a nor’easter coming through, the worst storm in several years. You go to bed, quietly excited at the thought of the fairly certain snow day — build a snowman with the kids, maybe work through the email that has piled up, and do a little online shopping; after all Christmas is coming.

The United States faces a heightened threat of terrorist attack “for the foreseeable future” but any attack will likely be homegrown, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on Wednesday.
Chertoff, who said over the summer that he had a “gut feeling” that the country faced a heightened risk of attack, said that assessment still stands.
